Artist Statement

My paintings arise from fragments of lived experience — remembered places, imagined events, fleeting encounters, and landscapes both seen and dreamed. I work in acrylic on canvas in my studio in Healdsburg, California. The landscapes are drawn from Northern California, where I live, walk, and observe, yet they are not descriptions of particular places. They are accumulations of memory, perception, and change.

For me, landscape and figure are not separate languages. A landscape may become a memory, a body may become a place, and narrative appears only in fragments. The figures inhabit gestures, dramas, and dances without fixed stories, leaving space for uncertainty and recognition.

I am interested in paintings that resist literal description and invite participation. Meaning does not arrive fully formed but emerges through relationship—between color and color, figure and ground, movement and stillness, painting and viewer.

As a committed colorist, I work with hue, contrast, rhythm, and motion to create visual tensions and harmonies. Layers overlap and dissolve: truth and invention, symbol and experience, presence and absence. The landscape and human figure become temporary forms through which these relationships appear.

I do not believe painting reveals a single truth. Each artist contributes a way of seeing; together these many voices form an incomplete and ongoing description of human experience. My work is an attempt to pay attention to what appears and disappears.

Biography

I was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1944 and grew up in California, graduating from San Luis Obispo High School in 1962.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University in 1978, where I studied with artists associated with the Bay Area abstractionist tradition. Mel Henderson, Joe Hawley, Pat McKee, and Tom Thompson helped shape my early affinity for bold color, rhythmic structure, and abstraction. I have also studied with George Post, Ken Sikora, Bob Burridge, and Bob Rhoades.

Following an entrepreneurial career in telecommunications that took me around the world, I returned to painting full-time twenty years ago. Living and working in Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Taiwan, and Brazil expanded my visual vocabulary and deepened my awareness of cultural and geographic particularity. I now live and paint in Healdsburg, California, in Sonoma County's wine country.

As a former partner at the Edgewater Gallery in Ft. Bragg, California, I have placed original acrylic paintings with private collectors and institutions internationally. Original works are available for acquisition through this site.

I continue to draw inspiration from Joan Mitchell, David Park, the Society of Six, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. My work sits within the tradition of Bay Area abstract expressionism while remaining rooted in the landscapes and light of Northern California.
